How can I get a tutor?

Come to The Learning Cooperative in Living/Learning Commons, Room 244 during daytime hours any weekday (Call the Learning Co-op at 802-656-4075 for the exact schedule) to fill out some paperwork (required once each academic year) and to meet with an Intake Counselor (required the first time you come in to do the paperwork).  All the policies & procedures will be explained to you, and you will be given information about how to contact a tutor.

Can I get tutor contact information over the phone?

Yes, if you have gone through intake previously and if you have done the paperwork at some point during the current academic year.  Otherwise, you must come to the Learning Cooperative to obtain tutor contact information.

How long does it take to get a tutor?

The intake process takes about fifteen minutes. At that time, the intake counselor will either give you the name and e-mail address of a qualified tutor in the area of study in which you need help, or schedule a one-hour lab tutoring appointment which meets at the Learning Cooperative.

Who are the tutors and how do I know they are qualified to help me?

All tutors are UVM students who have received a written recommendation from a professor in the course that they wish to tutor, and must go through at least some training.

Where and when does tutoring take place?

Tutoring sessions occur in the Learning Co-op.  

How much does tutoring cost?

Tutoring is FREE for all UVM students. If you fail to show up for a scheduled session with a tutor or do not cancel 24 hours before your scheduled meeting, your student account will be billed.

What do I do if there is no tutor for my course?

Ask that your request be entered on the waiting list in the notebook at the Co-op's front desk. Go through intake at the Co-op and fill out any necessary paperwork so you'll be set to go if you're contacted and told that a tutor has been found. We will make every effort to locate a tutor for you usually with in 2-3 weeks. You can also check to see if we have drop-in tutoring for your class. What if I am unhappy with the tutor assigned to me?

We often give you contact information for more than one tutor for each course.  So if the tutor you meet with does not work out, feel free to contact another tutor in the same course. If you have tried all the tutor names you were given, contact the Learning Co-op to see if other tutors for your course have been hired recently.
