What Happens in a Session

During individualized sessions, you will learn and practice strategies to strengthen the following skills:

You will learn how to deal with behaviors that interfere with learning:

  • Procrastination
  • Getting stuck
  • Lack of motivation

You will learn how to create a Study System:

  • Discover and accommodate your individual learning style
  • Learn strategies to reduce time on task
  • Manage your time, balancing social and academic needs
  • Learn how to read a textbook efficiently
  • Study actively
  • Practice short-burst learning

You will learn how to read more effectively:

If you feel as if you are reading all the material assigned and are still not getting things right on the exam OR you can't possibly read everything that is required in the time allowed...

  • Use the structure of the chapter as a guide

  • Learn text annotation to save time

You will learn how to improve your note-taking

  • Learn to include only the essentials
  • Learn to separate main ideas from facts
  • Learn to use the Cornell System
  • Learn to integrate notes from the lecture and the book

You will learn how to learn in the classroom:

  • Note-taking strategies
  • Active listening
  • Determining what is essential
  • Getting into the head of your professor

You will learn the ins and outs of exams:

  • How to prepare for exams:
    • Synthesizing major ideas/themes
    • Predicting questions
    • Memorizing material
    • Frequent review
  • How to take different types of exams:
    • Multiple choice
    • Essay
    • True/false
    • Short answer
  • How to learn from exams:
    Bring your recent exams to analyze your own strengths and weaknesses as a test-taker. Discover:
    • Patterns of errors
    • If you misread questions or missed the content
    • If you need to spend more time reviewing
    • If you need to focus more on studying lecture notes of the textbook
