Having distilled his own signature sound of blues and folk for over 40 years of touring and studio work, Chris Smither is an American original. A profound songwriter, Chris continues to hone his distinctive sound by drawing deeply from the blues, American folk music, and modern poets and philosophers. He has always traveled his own road, staying true to his musical vision. It is a long-standing Lane Series tradition to present the stripped-down honesty of one performer with a guitar and something to say, and it is an honor to feature this artist who has been called “one of roots music’s most passionate, soulful songsmiths and interpreters.”

Co-presented with the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts

After a hiatus of several years, we are delighted to present one of the world’s most creative classical theatre companies in one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies. The story of the battle of hearts, minds, and wits between the unforgettable characters Petruchio and Kate, Shrew is both fascinating and fun, and who better than Aquila to make it relevant for a contemporary audience. It is the company’s mission to make the classics accessible, and they do this through creative interpretations using music, movement, and a youthful, yet experienced ensemble who works together permanently. We have greatly enjoyed their productions of Othello, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and more — and we are looking forward to seeing what they can do with Shrew!

Price:

Fronted by David Wax and Suz Slezak, the David Wax Museum fuses traditional Mexican folk with American roots and indie folk to create an utterly unique Mexo-Americana aesthetic. Recently anointed as Boston’s Americana Artist of the Year, the David Wax Museum has been called “pure, irresistible joy” (Bob Boilen, NPR) and hailed by TIME.com for its “virtuosic musical skill and virtuous harmonies.” Their performance at the 2010 Newport Folk Festival was hailed as one of the highlights of the entire weekend by NPR. The ensemble’s joyful and infectious music combines Latin rhythms, call-and-response hollering, and donkey jawbone rattling; they have electrified audiences across the country and are “kicking up a cloud of excitement with their high-energy bordercrossing sensibility” (The New Yorker).

She is also admired for her do it yourself ethic. She has sold over 40,000 copies of her albums without a record label, management, or physical distribution, and her last CD spent over 49 weeks on the Billboard classical charts. An NPR Music favorite, we greatly admire her extraordinary cello technique, beautiful and spontaneous performances, and contemporary attitude toward her music and her career. The originality and beauty of her performances must be seen, and heard, to be believed.

Ten years later, he returned to Warsaw to win the top prize, the People’s Prize, and the Polonaise Prize. Since then, he has won critical and audience acclaim throughout the world and is known as one of the great interpreters of Chopin, “fulfilling a criterion which one only knows from great Chopinists such as Rubinstein, Benedetti-Michelangeli and Dinu Lipatti.” (Schwaebishe Zeitung, Germany) For us, he will perform works by Debussy, Liszt, Ravel, Janaçek, Rorem, and of course, Chopin (24 Preludes).

This time, they are joined by the wonderful Lucy Kaplansky, who appears on our stage for the first time. These gifted singer-songwriters are at the very top of their game, and they perform truly meaningful and heartfelt music. Expect an intimate evening of sharing songs, vocals, guitar, and piano. This is the American songwriting tradition at its very best.

Shortly after its 1994 formation, the Pacifica won the coveted Naumburg Prize, and has since received many honors. Recently, the Quartet presented the monumental Shostakovich cycle in Chicago and New York and the complete Beethoven cycle at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall in an unprecedented presentation of five concerts in three days. This past season, they performed the Shostakovich cycle at London’s Wigmore Hall and the Beethoven cycle at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. No hyperbole intended: they are simply one of the world’s best chamber music ensembles performing today. On the Lane Series, they will play Haydn’s Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 76, No. 4, “Sunrise”; Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 2; and Beethoven’s Quartet in A minor, Op. 132.

Price: $30 Adult/$15 Student
