True to their name, the Sphinx Virtuosi call up the vision of an iconic mythological feline with its immeasurable power, unwavering command and soulful beauty.– The Washington Post

Comprised of 18 of the nation’s top Black and Latino classical soloists, the SPHINX VIRTUOSI are cultural ambassadors and alumni of the internationally renowned Sphinx Competition who reunite each fall to tour the nation.  The Virtuosi’s mission is to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through a variety of repertoire. The string orchestra and its Catalyst Quartet, which is comprised of the four principals of the Sphinx Virtuosi, have won critical acclaim in performances around the world. Their 2014 tour presents a tribute to American music and features works by Aaron Copland, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Duke Ellington, John Corigliano, and Philip Glass. Our audience will be treated to a variety of combinations of the ensemble, from full string orchestra, to quartet, to solo violin.
