Birds eye view of Bartonsville

Title:
Birds eye view of Bartonsville
Town:
Rockingham
County:
Windham
State:
Vermont
Date:
1900 - 1920
Description:
Birds eye view of Bartonsville all the way up the river to Chester. You can see the field that used to be there before they rebuilt 103 and cut the field in half. A farm at the back of the field is visible, this is where the the old town farm was, where the indigent residents used to live and work the farm. The upper village of Bartonsville used to be called La Grange and was the thriving center with a tavern which was a stage coach stop and other businesses until the mills opened up in the lower village and the center of the town moved about 1/2 mile along the river. A stone fence can be seen in the foreground of the image. Some rolling hills, trees and farms can be seen in the distance. Susan Hammond writes on 2013-12-09: The orginal image is not a post card but a glass slide that is in the collection of the Chester Historical Society.
