Bridge over Otter Creek in Vergennes
1910 - 1940
This black and white photograph captures the bridge over Otter Creek in Vergennes. The large creek enters the foreground of the image, passes beneath the bridge in the midground of the image, and meanders into the background. The steel bridge is supported by stone piers and abutments and protected by a decorative metal railing. Leafy deciduous trees grow along the banks of the creek, and several buildings are sited along the banks of the creek. One small, square building sited along the left side of the creek near the bridge is constructed of brick and covered in vines. A large, three-story, brick building is located up the right side of the creek. The remainder of the buildings along the creek appear to be modest, wood-frame structures. A stately brick dwelling is located atop a large hill overlooking the town at the right side of the image. A few more dwellings are visible in the background on the left side of the image. Trees are scattered around the dwellings. Hills rise in the background. The leafy foliage suggests the season is summer. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
