Aeolus Inn
1910 - 1940
This black and white photograph captures the Aeolus Inn in East Dorset. A dirt road passes at an angle across the foreground of the image. A patch of grass is visible on the near side of the road in the lower left corner of the image. The road surface is very wet, and water has pooled along the shoulders. Several mature, leafy, deciduous trees line the far side of the road and create a thick shade canopy over the streetscape. The inn is located on the far side of the road behind the line of trees. The building is two stories in height and has a wood frame covered in clapboards and a gable roof. A decorative porch wraps around the first story of the building. Wooden rocking chairs and folding chairs line the porch. A porch swing hangs on the right side of the porch. A woman reclines in a rocker to the right of the main door. A dog sits at her feet. A sign hangs over the porch steps that reads: "Mt. Aeolus." Another sign appears to have fallen off a tree that stands at the left end of the porch. A third sign is mounted on a wood post along the roadside to the left of the inn. The sign, atop which lights are mounted, reads: "Mt. Aeolus Inn and Restaurant." Smaller print at the bottom cannot be read. A large wood-frame barn is located to the rear of the inn. A cupola sits atop the barn roof, and shrubs grow along the foundation of the barn. Another building is located to the rear of the barn in the background of the image. The lawn to the right of the inn is nicely manicured. A stone birdbath and a few plantings complete the landscaping of the side lawn. A driveway extends off the main road to the left of the inn. Utility lines pass across the foreground of the image. The thick foliage suggests as summer season.
