American Flag Flying on Main Street

American Flag Flying on Main Street
1908 - 1912
This black and white photograph looks down Main Street in Cabot. The wide, dirt road enters the foreground of the image and forks at the background of the image. Tracks from wagons and early automobiles traverse the dirt road. Sidewalks parallel both sides of the road. Hitching posts line the sidewalks. Several, wood-frame, commercial buildings are clustered along the streetscape. American flags hang from the façades of all the buildings, and a large flag hangs from a wire over the center of the road. Near the foreground on the right side of the image is a small, one-story, flat-roof building with large, plate-glass windows. Advertisements are displayed in the windows. Just beyond the small store is a large, two-and-one-half-story, gable-roof building that has a columned, two-story porch along the façade. A signboard posted along the porch railing reads: "Rogers & Currier." A barrel, a lawn mower, and several other items are scattered around the first-story porch. A sign with a bell hangs from a porch column, indicating a telephone is located within the store. Located beyond the Rogers & Currier store is a two-story, hipped-roof building that boasts an ornate, two-story, wrapping porch. Plants, wooden chairs, and several other items line the porches. Several sings hang along the front of the building. One sign advertises gasoline. An 1910s-era gasoline pump stands along the street at the front of the building. Further down the street is a small, gable-roof commercial building that is adorned by a large, columned portico along the façade. A horse-drawn wagon and an automobile are parked outside the building. Located in the foreground on the left side of the road is a large, two-and-one-half-story, gable-roof, commercial building that boasts an ornate, two-story porch on the façade. A horse-drawn carriage is parked outside the building. A fire hydrant stands along the side of the street at the front of the building. Shrubs grow along the building's foundation. The porch of a dwelling is visible beyond the commercial building. A large dwelling is sited at the end of the road, just before it forks The building has a gable roof and a decorative front porch. Flower boxes line the porch railing. A manicured lawn spreads out at the front of the dwelling. Wooden utility poles line both sides of the road. Several mature, leafy, deciduous trees are clustered in the foreground of the image, just before the commercial district, and along the forked roads in the background. The thick foliage suggests a summer season.
