Title:
The Richmond Checkered House Bridge
- Date:
- 2009-12-19
- Description:
- Did you know that the checkered house bridge is 350ft. long? In 1927 to 1929 the bridge was rebuilt because it was washed away in the 1927 flood. It took two years to rebuild the checkered house bridge after the flood. There is now a house to the left of the bridge. The house was burned and has boards on the windows, so no animals can get in, no one lives in this house.

Title:
Building the Checkered House Bridge
- Date:
- 1927 - 1929
- Description:
- This image shows construction on the Checkered House Bridge in Richmond, a 350-foot Pennsylvania truss. The original bridge was destroyed in the 1927 flood, and this replacement was completed in 1929. In the photo, there are large steel beams and tall poles. The arched siding has been completed, and between the two sides is some large machinery. In the distance are wooded slopes, and leafy deciduous trees can be seen on either side of the bridge. The Winooski River can be seen between some of these trees. It is likely summer. This information comes from "Crossings, A History of Vermont Bridges" by Robert McCullough.
