Train Tracks Toward a Tunnel

Title:
Train Tracks Toward a Tunnel
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1861 - 1920
Description:
This image shows train tracks leading up to a stone arched tunnel. The tunnel was built by the Vermont and Canada Railroad in 1861 and remains in service today. There are leafy deciduous trees above the tunnel. This information comes from "Crossings, A History of Vermont Bridges" by Robert McCullough. Pete Chagnon writes on 2009-08-05: This is the tunnel that crosses under North Avenue in Burlington. going towards Winooski. As a kid in the 50's. we used hop the morning freight as it left Burlington and ride through the tunnel clinging to the ladder on the side of a boxcar. We usually jumped off in the Intervale before the train picked up too much speed. Once in a while we would ride the freight into Winooski going over the Blue Bridge.
