A View from North Beach
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2008-04-14
Description:
In the foreground of this photo, we see a grassy ground intermixed with small patches of sand. Past the grass is the sandy shore of North Beach, on Lake Champlain. Along the shore there are several coniferous and deciduous trees visible. Being early spring, the deciduous trees have not yet begun to grow leaves. In the center of the photo there is a small permanent public barbecue standing next to a garbage can. To the right of these objects is a picnic table with several people seated. To the right of the picnic table is a beach house structure that is opened for use during the summer. On the far shore we see a tree-lined peninsula (Lone Rock Point) that contains a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. Compared to the older photograph of the area, it seems that some of the original trees are no longer standing. Several of the ones that still are standing, donít seem to be as healthy as they once were. Additionally, the original beech house structure has been replaced by a newer structure.

Title:
Busy Day at North Beach
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1930 - 1945
Description:
The typed caption on this hand colored historic image reads, "North Beach," at the top and "Lake Champlain," in the lower right corner. North Beach is a small bay surrounded by deciduous forest and with large elm trees and Conifers spaced out along the beach. The sands of the beach extend back the entire length of the foreground of the image, approximately 100 meters, to the pavilion located on the right side of the image. There are two bikes parked along the building and stairs and a ramp leading up to a two-story deck area. The beach is fairly crowded with most people in bathing suits standing, socializing, and laying on towels. There are two black posts spaced across the center of the image that could be lampposts. The waters of Lake Champlain are very blue and the sun is setting in the background.
