Title:
Winooski Gorge
Town:
Winooski
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2008-04
Description:
This is a picture of a large gorge over the Winooski River. The picture was taken from the bridge that crosses over the gorge. The picture was taken on a clear day and the vegetation looks almost full. There are a couple trees in the front of the picture that do not yet have their leaves. There are cliffs on either side of the gorge. The cliff on the left side is all rock until about 2/3rds of the way up where the trees begin. The cliff on the right side is much smaller and rocks are only seen near the bottom where it meets the river. The gorge opens up into a wider river towards the top of the picture and forests can be seen in the background. This re-shot is much different than the original picture. Firstly, there is track laid for a railroad on the top of the right cliff in the new picture. Also, the forest and trees look much more lush and full in the second picture. This difference could be due to the time of year the original picture was taken but there seems to be more trees in general. Finally, the river is more calm in the original picture. Again, this could be due to the time of the year. Since the new picture was taken in the spring, it is likely that the river is higher and stronger due to melting snow.

Title:
The Gorge
Town:
Winooski
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1915 - 1930
Description:
This color image shows a view of the gorge from the High Bridge over the Winooski River. The gorge is in the foreground with high steep outcrop cliffs on the left. Forests are visible on both sides of the river in the foreground. The majority of the trees are conifers with a few hardwoods mixed in on the right. The landscape flattens out into large mostly cleared floodplains with a few small islands visible on the right side of the river. Some hills and mountains are visible in the distance. The season is most likely fall due to the few spots of color on the leaves to the right. The writing on the postcard reads, "The Gorge, Burlington, VT."
