Ely Mine, Looking North

Title:
Ely Mine, Looking North
Town:
Vershire
County:
Orange
State:
Vermont
Date:
1877
Description:
This historic photograph documents the Ely Mine in Vershire, Vermont in 1877. In the foreground, a barren hillside leads down to the bottom of a large mine tailings pile. The hillside is littered with large rocks and sediment. At the bottom of the large tailings pile there appears to be a fieldstone flute, which is in the process of being buried by the ever-growing pile of talus. Sitting upon the top of the pile of talus is the large smelting shed (right) that appears to be in operation. To the left of the smelting shed is the mine town, which is comprised of a number of residential dwellings and industrial buildings. Numerous piles of mine waste, industrial equipment, and people can be seen in the yard surrounding the smelting shed. The hills surrounding the mine appear partially forested with a mix of conifer and deciduous tree species. Mountains can be seen in the background. season summer.
