Crushing Plant, Elizabeth Mine

Title:
Crushing Plant, Elizabeth Mine
Town:
Strafford
County:
Orange
State:
Vermont
Date:
1907
Description:
The back of the historic photograph reads, "Looking East over the Crushing Plant and Flotation Mill in South Stratford towards Gove Hill the camera shows the tailings pile that has partially filled the valley between the two ridges. In 1907 Heckscher's Furnace, dust flute and 125 foot chimney and an old boarding house were located where the tailings pile is now." This historic photograph documents a large industrial complex and a tailings pile at the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford, Vermont. In the foreground, a group of young deciduous trees partially blocks the view of the valley below. Through the trees, a utility post and the back of a large industrial complex can be seen. Large wood sheathed buildings connected by various passages and walkways characterize this complex. The utility poles continue down towards the complex, where they die off down the hill. In front of the large complex is an open field, upon which grows grass and is bordered by a wooden fence. Out beyond this fenced in area is a more barren field, which is actually a large tailings pile. This pile fills the valley, and spans across to the trees in the background. Beyond the tailings piles are numerous hills and mountains which are forested by a variety of deciduous and conifer tree species. season autumn.
