American Woolen Mills
Town:
Winooski
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2008-06-24
Description:
View of site of American Woolen Mills, Winooski VT, from Salmon Hole. This photo represents a closer view of the mill site than the original photo. In this photo one can see that the mill is no longer extant. There is a newer red brick building that appears to be some sort of housing. There is still a smokestack. One can see exposed bedrock on an angle with shrubs and low vegetation growing out of it. The water is still in the foreground; the water in the distance is moving. There is considerable cloud cover (the photo was taken a few minutes before a thunderstorm struck). Monkton quartzite is visible.

View of Woolen Mills in Winooski
Town:
Winooski
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1907 - 1915
Description:
The typed caption on this historic image reads, "View of American Woolen Mills, Winooski, VT." The Woolen Mill is the large brick building that stretches across the middle of the image. Six stories are visible in the middle section and there is a large smokestack extending above the mill. A series of smaller buildings are to the left of this section and there is another smokestack. There is another brick building with only two stories visible above the trees and a different style window to the right of the middle building. Another building that is one story higher is visible behind this one. Another larger building with large windows is visible to the far right of the image. In front of this is either that waterfall going over the dam or a hill slope. There is a row of trees and sandy soils between the stretch of mill buildings and the shore of the Winooski River in the foreground. Large outcrops of the Monkton Formation disrupt the channel. A small island towards the right of the channel has sandy soils and some small bushes growing, as well as an on a narrow stretch towards the left of the image. A small section of land is in the left foreground with conifers visible downhill. Behind the Mill buildings, is a wooded area with many buildings visible towards the top of the hill. Two steeples are visible towards the right of the horizon as well as another tall smokestack. The season is summer.
