Learning on the Green
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1950 - 1960
Description:
This historic photograph documents a group of students learning on the University of Vermont Green. In the foreground, a group of 30 plus female students (all in skirts and blouses) sits around a professor in a half circle, listening to what he has to say. The students all appear to have their schoolbooks with them, and most appear to be paying attention to what the professor has to say. The students sit upon the UVM green, which stretches out around them in all directions. Directly behind the students is the statue of Lafayette upon his granite pedestal, facing north towards Colchester Avenue. At the edge of the green, a sidewalk can be seen heading across the photograph, and this sidewalk is lined with large deciduous trees. Beyond the trees is South Prospect Street, which appears paved with a line of parked cars parked along the far side. South Prospect is lined with utility poles, small shrubs, and some traffic signs. On the opposite side of South Prospect stands the Fletcher Allen Health Care, UHC Campus, which is a large brick and stone building. Around the base of this building, a number of large conifer trees can be seen. Across Colchester Avenue from this building is the Lambda Iota fraternity house, which is a large Greek revival building with large deciduous trees surrounding the property. Directly in front of the house, a large utility pole can be seen. Other residential houses and mix species forest can be seen in the background. Season is spring. UVM campus.

Title:
The UVM Green
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2005-08-09
Description:
The 2005 photograph documents the change that has occurred on the University of Vermont Green. In the foreground, the large open area where the students once sat still exists, however a large hedgerow has been planted behind the statue of Lafayette. This hedgerow bocks out the view of the statue, and most of the view of buildings across the green. To the right of the hedge, a few bricks that make up John Dewey Hall can be seen. To the right of the hedgerow is a large deciduous tree, which was not fully visible in the historic photograph. A sidewalk still can be seen heading across the photograph, however this sidewalk is lined with lampposts for easier night walking. Beyond the sidewalk South Prospect Street can be seen (note the automobiles), however anything beyond this road is not viewable due to the large canopy of the trees in front of it. Lots of new tree and shrub growth can be documented in this 2005 photograph. Season summer, UVM campus
