Title:
Class on the Green
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1970
Description:
This historic photograph documents students sitting in a circle listing to a teacher lecture on the University of Vermont Green. In the foreground, a student sits by herself underneath a large maple tree, with her shoes off, reading a book. In the center of the green a larger group of students can be seen sitting around a teacher having a discussion. The women in the photograph all appear in skirts, while all men appear in slacks. The green appears well kept, and has large deciduous elm trees lining South Prospect Street, as well as other small deciduous trees spread out across the rest of the green. Numerous walkways cross the green and lead towards South Prospect Street. These walkways appear paved, but have significant soil erosion associated adjacent to them. South Prospect Street is a paved street with one row of parked cars, which is lined with street signs and lampposts. Across South Prospect is the Waterman Building, which is covered with ivy. The lawn surrounding Waterman is landscaped with shrubs and deciduous trees. To the left of Waterman the building at 109 South Prospect Street can be seen. This building is brick as well, with a large chimney, and ornate roof details. Large conifer trees and shrubs surround the house at 109 South Prospect. Other Burlington dwellings and mixed tree species can be seen behind these buildings. Season autumn, UVM campus

Title:
Looking Across the Green Towards Waterman
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2005-08-09
Description:
The 2005 photograph documents the changes that have take place on the University of Vermont Green since the historic photograph was taken. In the foreground, the same tree that is visible in the historic photograph is still visible. Even though it is now missing its lower most limb, the scar and location of where that limb was attached is still visible. This large tree appears to be one of the only large trees that appear in both photographs. The large elms that were present in the historic photograph have been removed, and replaced with other deciduous trees. The green still appears to be well kept, with numerous walking paths still leading toward South Prospect Street. These walkways appear to be one less in number then those observed in the historic photograph, however the massive soil erosion adjacent to the pathways is still a visible problem. South Prospect Street is still paved, however it no longer has any parking spaces associated with it. South Prospect Street is still lined with lampposts, traffic signs, and now a rope fence. Behind South Prospect is the Waterman Building. The Waterman building is no longer covered with ivy, but the lawn surrounding the building appears similar. The small deciduous tree in the historic photograph appears much larger in the 2005 re-shoot. Bike racks, trashcans, and flower gardens have also been added to the exterior of the building. To the left of the Waterman building is 109 South Prospect Street, which still retains all of its historic photograph landscaping. The railing on the roof porch of the building appears to have been removed, however besides that the building appears quite similar to how it looked in the historic photograph. Other Burlington dwellings and mixed tree species can be seen behind these buildings. Season summer, UVM campus
