Title:
Ira Allen Chapel (From University Place)
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1950 - 1960
Description:
This historic photograph documents the view of Ira Allen Chapel from University Place after its completion. In the foreground, students walk back and forth across the sidewalks in front of the chapel on their way to and from class. The two sets of sidewalks are separated by a well-maintained grassy hill, and connected by two sets of concrete staircases. The hill that separates the walkway is almost devoid of vegetation, and contains only a few small shrubs, which appear to be newly planted. Above this scene, utility lines can be seen adjacent to a large elm tree across the top of the photograph. Ira Allen Chapel is a large brick Greek Revival Building, with large Pillars in front of the entranceway, numerous windows, and ivy and small shrubs planted around the exterior. Behind the Chapel (On the Right) a small section of Torrey Hall is visible. Season autumn, UVM Campus

Title:
Ira Allen Chapel (2005) From University Place
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2005-07-21
Description:
The 2005 Photograph documents the view of Ira Allen Chapel from University Place. In the foreground, a row of cars, and a physical plant employee, now span University Place in front of the Chapel. In this photograph, no students are walking between the two sets of sidewalks, which are still separated by a hill, however this hill is now covered with numerous hedgerows and flowers. The two walkways are also still connected by the same set of concrete staircases. Above this scene Utility lines and the large elm tree are no longer visible. The Ira Allen Chapel appears similar to the historic photograph. It is still a large brick Greek Revival Building, with large Pillars in front of the entranceway, numerous windows, and ivy and small shrubs planted around the exterior. However, in the 2005 photograph the doors appear to have been replaced, and possibly painted. Also a medium sized maple tree is now visible on the grass in front of the chapel. This tree now blocks the view of Torrey Hall. Season summer, UVM Campus
