Title:
Billings Student Center and Ira Allen (Southern View)
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2005-07-21
Description:
The 2005 photograph documents the completion of Ira Allen Chapel and the subsequent changes that have taken place on campus since 1926. In the foreground the grassy hill that was located adjacent to the Chapel has been excavated, and in its place has been built a large brick dinning hall called Cook Commons. The original Billings library tower in the historic photograph is still visible, however only the top of tower can now be seen above the dinning hall roof. Other changes include the addition of the road which runs behind the Chapel, and the addition of the Campus Center Theater, which is the large brick building with the triangular top in the background. The new road is paved and lined with lampposts and shrubs. On top of Ira Allen Chapel, a golden copula and bell tower have also been completed since 1926. The outline of Torrey Hall is visible on the extreme right hand side of the photograph. Season summer, UVM Campus

Title:
Construction of Ira Allen (Southern View)
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1926
Description:
This historic photograph documents a partially constructed Ira Allen Chapel in 1926. In this photograph, Ira Allen Chapel is framed in wood staging, from which workers are busy pointing and laying brick. Most of the walls and window framing appears completed in this photograph, and it appears that most of the work done at this time is focused on finishing the roof. A few construction workers are on the roof, and they appear to be cutting and fixing boards on to the building. Around the base of Ira Allen Chapel the ground is littered with large and small construction debris, most of which appears to consist of wooden framing, and various pieces of metal bracing. Adjacent to the building is a small construction shed, which appears rather derelict, and ill maintained. On the top of the low hill (to the left of the building) the corner of the Billings Library can be seen. This building is composed of a metamorphic red quartzite, and is located on University Place. Behind the Chapel to the left, is a small grove of mixed species forest. Some trees appear devoid of leaves suggesting the season is late autumn. UVM Campus
