Title:
Burlington Waterfront from Battery Park
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2008-04-27
Description:
This image shows the Burlington waterfront area from Battery Park. The foreground is filled with undergrowth and alone tree growing up from the bank that leads down to the waterfront area. The waterfront is made up of a grassy park and the Burlington boathouse and its surrounding docks in the distance. Lake Champlain is visible with the shoreline further South and an island in the distance as well as the boathouse. The landscape changes are quite distinct in this image. What used to be a smoky lumber yard has now been replaced by a park and a highly pedestrian friendly bike path and boathouse. This is due to the waterfront restoration that occurred during the last two decades of the 20th century.

Title:
Burlington Lumber District
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1860 - 1880
Description:
This image shows a view of the waterfront when it was occupied by lumber yards. Lake Champlain is to the right along with a portion of the stone Burlington breakwater. The lumber yard takes up the majority of the flat shoreline with many large stacks of lumber in the foreground. A few small conifers grow among the lumber stacks. Train tracks border the lumber on the left with more vegetation visible to the left of the tracks. Several smokestacks and larger buildings associated with the lumber companies are visible beyond the stacks of lumber along the shoreline. The boat house is visible in the distance on the lake with several other buildings, including houses, visible on the sloping hill in the distance. The hills appear forested among the buildings and the season is most likely summer.
