McCullough Highway

Title:
McCullough Highway
Town:
Fayston
County:
Washington
State:
Vermont
Date:
1957?
Description:
This image shows three cars traveling on a very muddy Route 17. There are deep tire ruts in the road with large snow banks on both sides of the road. Utility lines and poles follow along the right side of the road. A few conifers and an open area are visible on the right with a mixed forest on the left. The forest continues into the distance in the background. The cars look to be drving on the wrong side of the road. The season is most likely spring, also known as mud season in Vermont. Wes Wright writes on 2007-05-18 that the turnpike was constructed by the CCC in 1933. This $90,000 road project ran for 4 1?2 miles from Route 100 in the river valley to a parking loop at what would become the Mad River Glen ski area. The McCullough Turnpike, now Route 17, was completed in 1958, crossing the Green Mountains from Fayston into Lincoln and providing an important "gap" and east-west route over the mountains.
