Aerial View of Breeding Barn

Title:
Aerial View of Breeding Barn
Town:
Shelburne
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1958
Description:
On historic photograph, " The Breeding Barn of J. Watson Webb at Shelburne may be the largest structure of its kind in the country. A massive combination of wood, stone and iron girders 418 feet long and 107 wide, the barn has an indoor riding and exercise ring 375 by 85 feet. Looking north over the peacefully rolling Vermont countryside which Mr. Webb has been farming since 1908 (he now also raises purebred Herefords), the granary, dairy barn and other farm buildings on the estate can be seen." The pastures surrounding the Breeding barn are fenced off, and often lined with deciduous trees. Numerous Elm trees can be seen lining roads and proving shade in fields across the farm. The hills in the background are partially forested, with small pockets mixed species forest. Season summer. Photo courtesy of the 1958 Sports Illustrated.
