Charlotte
County:

State:
Vermont
Date:
1968-06

The photo shows the ferry leaving the Charlotte dock. Note the forested point behind the ferry. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2005-1-13: The first ferry that went from Charlotte across to New York was operated by John McNeil(sometimes spelled McNeal. Although it was never a village in the usual sense of the word, the settlement that grew up around the ferry dock had several businesses & a hotel that was very popular in summer. McNeil became the first town clerk & the first town representative to the state legislature.

Title:
A View of the Ferry, Reshoot
Town:
Charlotte
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2007-06-23
Description:
This modern photograph shows the Charlotte ferry arriving from New York at the Charlotte dock. The dock extends into Lake Champlain with wooden posts in the water along either side. The ferry is passing by Cedar Beach. The Adirondack Mountains can be seen in the background. The historic photograph shows no evidence of this modern docking system, which is complete with a parking lot and paved loading zone behind the photographer. However, the wooden posts remain. The ferry in the modern image looks very similar to the historic one, but appears to have more cabin space.
