Title:
Bare Hill Behind the State House
- Date:
- 1860 - 1876
- Description:
- Printed on the historic photo: "Taken from the south side of the Winooski, this picture shows the back of State Street and the bare hill that was later to become Hubbard Park (1900). The first Catholic church (background, center) was built on Court Street in 1859. To the left of it is the rectory; to the right we see what is still known as the Dewey schoolhouse." Note the extensively cleared hills in the background and foreground, and various types of wooden fences on the far slope, also the large landslide directly behind the state house. Loona Brogan writes on 2006-10-12: According to the Vermont Historical Society web site, this image is from 1874. Between 1859 and 1907, the dome was copper-plated, and painted dark red. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2007-01-13: Note the long covered bridge, thru which the railroad tracks run.

Title:
Reforestation on Hill Slopes
- Date:
- 2004-10-16
- Description:
- The current photo shows the vast amount of reforestation that has occurred throughout the second half of the 20th century. The golden dome of the state house is barely visible through the trees. The trees in the foreground consist of young conifers with a mixture of older conifers and hardwoods farther down the slope. The hill slope behind the state house is barely visible and is now completely covered with trees.
