Title:
Darling Hill and River Garden Kitchens
Town:
Burke
County:
Caledonia
State:
Vermont
Date:
2008-03-15
Description:
Image of dirt road and much snow with forested slopes in distance and large excavator near house. There are utility lines. As you can see there is a more defined driveway these days, although the caretaker in the historic image could be merely preparing to shovel off the driveway. The buildings directly across the street are clearly gone and have been replaced by a very small building, almost a shack. Across the river and elevated a little bit is a white house that remains in its location to this day.

Title:
Corner in East Burke
Town:
Burke
County:
Caledonia
State:
Vermont
Date:
1920 - 1927
Description:
This photo, taken from the top of the the East Burke Club property, shows the bend in the main road in East Burke. This road, modern day US 114, was wiped out in the 1927 flood and then rebuilt almost identically. This image was taken in the early days of the East Burke Club and Clubhouse/town space. The buildings in the center of the photo are the sawmill and grainery, neither of which remain today. On the right side of the photo is a private residence that remains today. The man in the foreground is most likely the caretaker of the East Burke Clubhouse. He is carrying a long pole or stick. There is a street light next to the road. There is snow on the ground and the deciduous trees in the foreground are without leaves indicating the season is winter. Conifer trees can be seen on the hillside in the background.
