Title:
Burke Hollow 2008
Town:
Burke
County:
Caledonia
State:
Vermont
Date:
2008-03-15
Description:
Image shows snowy field through trees with Burke Mountain ski area in the distance. The first thing that you'll notice about this photo and the historic photo is that they don't exactly match up. Where I was hoping to take this picture from (just a little further up the hill from which it was taken) was thickly wooded, which is itself noteworthy. As you can see in the historic image, Burke Hollow was not thickly wooded at all in 1896. The church in the middle of the historic image is also in the middle of this modern image, except trees make it very difficult to tell. The cemetery behind the church also exists and is in this modern picture except that trees are blocking that as well. The key landmarks are the church in the middle of both images and the ridgeline of Burke mountain behind Burke Hollow. There has been a lot of reforestation in Burke Hollow.

Description:
This is a picture of Burke Hollow taken in 1896. The hillside was cleared to make room for sheep pastures and several fence lines are visible in the photo. In the bottom portion of the photo is the town center of Burke Hollow, which at that time was a bustling local center with a general store, cemetery, and church. In the background is Burke Mountain.
