Aerial Photograph of the Winooski River

Title:
Aerial Photograph of the Winooski River
Town:
Middlesex
County:
Washington
State:
Vermont
Date:
1927-11-12
Description:
The historic image gives a bird's eye view of the Winooski River Valley a week after the 1927 flood. A caption at the bottom of the image reads, "11-12-27-10:15A. East of Middlesex, Vt." The riparian zone is mostly bare. A road below the river and a railroad track above the river were damaged in the flood. The foundation of a buildings wiped out in the flood is also visible in the floodplain below the river. Loona Brogan writes on 2006-9-6: I had always thought the construction of the interstate had created this oxbow: apparently, the construction of the railroad track is actually what sealed off this curve in the Winooski River. The flood of '27 ignored the unnatural 'dam,' as we can see, and filled the oxbow to overflowing so it compromised the railroad tracks. There are stately Elms growing along the flood-inundated road along the bottom right of the older image. These are gone in the newer photo, and what appears from the crown shape to be maples have replaced them.
