Title:
Abandoned Railroad Bridge over the Lamoille River
Town:
Cambridge
County:
Lamoille
State:
Vermont
Date:
2009-04-11
Description:
The photo shows an abandoned one lane bridge across the Lamoille River in early spring. The bridge is supported by piers composed of layered stone. There is a central pier in the river and two larger stone at opposing river banks. The bridge is supported by large metal beams of varying lengths and heights. The beam farthest left is the least tall and is a third the size of the beam adjacent to it which is the tallest. Those beams are separated by the central pier which is capped by a cement top that extends half way up the side of the metal beam. The beam next to it is both between the sizes of the other two beams and is a continuous piece. Above the metal beams are wooden planks and wooden guard rails running the length of the bridge. Some pieces are missing. The river bank is very overgrown by bare deciduous trees, shrubs and grass. A small grass hill can be seen in the distance sloping upward toward the left of the photo. The bridge is no longer covered. The river banks are similarly vegetated. The structure of the bridge itself has also changed. Though the central stone pier remains, there have been additional metal beams placed beneath the floor of the bridge.
