Title:
1890 Tunbridge World's Fair
Town:
Tunbridge
County:
Orange
State:
Vermont
Date:
1890
Description:
The historic image shows people gathered for the fair. A wooden fence with the words "World's Fair" borders the fairground in the foreground of the image. Netting is set up for some type of game just beyond the fence. A large circular tent is set up on the right side and several smaller tents are set up in the middle of the photograph. One tent with an American flag has a sign on it that reads, "tin-types." People with horses and carriages are gathered around a track on the left side of the photograph. There is a farmhouse, two outbuildings, and a barn on a cleared hill beyond the fairgrounds. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2005-4-17: The first Tunbridge World's Fair was held on 2 October 1867 on the farm of Elisha Lougee in North Tunbridge. Vermont Lieutenant Governor Burnham Martin of Chelsea spoke at that event and referred to it as the "Little World's Fair". The fair had been organized by the people of Orange, Washington & Windsor counties who wanted to see who had the best & fastest horses, the best looking & productive cows and the best sheep. At a later date the fair moved to the village of Tunbridge, as is noted in the text attached to photo of the King house in North Tunbridge. The overall organization responsible for the fairs is the Union Agricultural Society, which was founded in 1875 and is the oldest one in the U.S. although it was quite curtailed during the Civil War & the two World Wars, the fair has run every year since it its inception. In 1996 the Vermont General Assembly passed a "Joint Resolution Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of the Tunbridge World's Fair." In addition to the annual October fair, many agricultural, educational & civic events take place in the buildings and on the fair grounds.
