Town:
Concord
County:
Essex
State:
Vermont
Date:
1880 - 1950
Description:
This image shows a horse standing next to a small shed in an open field. There are utility lines traveling over the shed. Shadow Lake dominates the center of the photograph and the landscape around the lake is forested hills and shorelines. There are forested mountains in the distance. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2005-5-31: I think this is a typographical error and the image is really one of three Shadow Lakes: Concord, Glover or Woodbury. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2005-6-2: Further research has established that this is Shadow Lake in Concord. It was originally Halls Pond, named for a local resident. In the present century, when the pond became popular with summer campers the name was changed to the more glamorous one. N.B. The Abnaki Indians noted the distinctive appearance of pond and called it Pekdabowk, meaning smoke pond.
