Approach to Lake View Hotel at Highgate Springs
1910 - 1940
This black and white photograph captures the approach to the new Lake View Hotel in Highgate Springs. The narrow dirt road enters the lower left corner of the image and winds into the background. Wheel tracks traverse the road surface, and gravel and rocks line the edges of the road. The corner of the Lake View Hotel is visible at the left edge of the image on the left side of the road. The hotel has a wood frame, a gable roof, and a front porch. A wooden swing hangs on the porch. A few small plantings grow along the foundation. Several modest wood-frame, gable-roof cabins are located further up the road. Three are clustered to the left of the road, and at least three are visible on the right side of the road. The cabins all have wood porches. The land around the cabins has been mostly cleared of vegetation, but a few deciduous trees are scattered around grounds. A line of deciduous trees grows beyond the cabins. Wooden utility poles march across the landscape. The leafy foliage suggests the season is summer. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
