Butler Lodge on the west slope of Mount Mansfield

Title:
Butler Lodge on the west slope of Mount Mansfield
Town:
Stowe
County:
Lamoille
State:
Vermont
Date:
1960
Description:
On the back of photograph is written, "Butler Lodge, on the west slope of Mt. Mansfield, under the "nose". Grande views towards L. Champlain, S. Strong (Burlington)." This is a photograph of a log cabin surrounded by snow covered conifers at the base of a cliff band. The picture was taken in winter, and there is a dusting of snow on everything except the cabin. The cabin has a red finish. Its lower half is constructed with logs in a horizontal orientation, and the upper half has logs in a vertical orientation. There are three large windows visible in the photograph, and one small window near the peak of the roof. All the windows appear to be sealed with some brown, translucent material. A door opens onto a small, elevated porch. A large pair of wooden snowshoes are leaning against the porch railing. There is a small clearing in front of the cabin, but the cabin is otherwise surrounded by snow-covered conifers. These conifers continue up a hillslope behind the cabin until they are interrupted by a cliff band. The sky is steel grey.
