Ely Mine Roast Beds and Smoke Stack

Title:
Ely Mine Roast Beds and Smoke Stack
Town:
Vershire
County:
Orange
State:
Vermont
Date:
1877
Description:
This is an 1877 photograph of the Ely roast beds in Vershire, Vermont. In the foreground of this image, there are a few small wooden buildings, which mostly have a uniform shape with a chimney on top. Behind this, there is a flattened incline on which the roast beds are set; the beds seem to be smoking. There is a small hillside in the background, which has little to no vegetation on it; there is a small circular tower on the top of the hill. Robert Totz writes on 2019-06-18: I believe the tower is the chimney, and the "shadow" is actually a very long stone flue that directs smoke to the chimney on top of the hill.
