Common Bridge

Title:
Common Bridge
Town:
Stockbridge
County:
Windsor
State:
Vermont
Date:
1907 - 1915
Description:
This historic image is a postcard of the Stockbridge Common Bridge, which was build it 1852, in the lower left corner of the image. The covered bridge crosses a river with a relatively straight channel and heavy riparian growth in the form of a line of trees on the far bank. The road passing through the bridge extends back, crosses a field, and joins with a small circle of houses and barns that make up a small community or neighborhood. These structures are located upslope, on what appears to be a river terrace or alluvial fan. The field below the structures could be interpreted as a floodplain. The area behind the community rises up as a hill with a few scattered boulders, outcrops, and individual trees in a clear-cut section of the hill, while the top of the hill is wooded. The season is summer.
