Aerial Photograph of UVM Campus and Winooski

Title:
Aerial Photograph of UVM Campus and Winooski
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1967
Description:
This historic photograph shows an aerial view of the University of Vermont occupying a dominant position on the top of the hill. In this photograph, Main Street is located on the far right hand side, and appears paved and lined with large elm trees and utility lines. As the street comes in to view it passes by the old Farm House, the Johnson House (590 Main Street), the Adams Building (601 Main Street), Nolin House (589 Main Street), and the Burlington City Reservoir. UVM sits upon an open terrace, surrounded on all four sides by streets; to the north by Colchester Avenue, the east by East Avenue, the south by Main Street, and the east by University Place. The UVM campus consists primarily of buildings, pathways, and roads, with only a mall area of green space visible in front of Chittenden, Buckham, and Wills dormitories. The UVM Green is bordered by large elm trees, and criss-crossed by numerous walking paths. In the center of the green sits the UVM fountain. Across the street is the Waterman building. Surrounding campus lays the city of Burlington, which appears mostly de-forested. Paved streets and sidewalks, many residential dwellings, and deciduous tree species are visible within the city. Below the hill, the city of Winooski is beside the Winooski River. On the river, a large mill sits, with the town of Winooski climbing the hill in the background. Farther upstream, the river flows under the Interstate 89 bridge, adjacent to the airport. The area is relatively clear of vegetation; however, the riparian zone appears forested. The lack of leaves on the trees suggests the season is either fall or spring. For more information on UVM and UVM buildings check out www.uvm.edu/campus
