Title:
Calhoun accident at Cornwall
Town:
Cornwall
County:
Addison
State:
Vermont
Date:
1936
Description:
A car has pitched off the road here in Cornwall in 1936. It appears that the driver of the car, a Mr. Calhoun, did some damage to a car across the street before spinning and skidding off the road. In this photograph a man can be seen laughing in the foreground as too confused onlookers glare at the car from behind. Wooden fences line this section of the road; further on the yards that can be seen are marked off by wire fences. Through the screen of deciduous tree branches we can see some wooden-frame buildings in the background: on the left, a barn with a ventilator roof and behind it one with a Dutch gambrel roof. On the left side of the street we can see a large dwelling in the Queen Anne style of architecture. All image rights reserved to Henry Sheldon Museum, www.henrysheldonmuseum.org. Stephen Payne writes on 2014-03-31: This photo is taken just east of the "Foote Farm" on Route 125 in Cornwall Vermont. Despite the description found here, there are no stone walls here in the clay "flats" along the Lemon Fair river. The house remains, now newly refurbished, but the barns burned many years ago.
