Title:
Baptist Church in Jamaica
Town:
Jamaica
County:
Windham
State:
Vermont
Date:
1910 - 1940
Description:
This black and white photograph captures the Baptist Church in Jamaica. A narrow, dirt road passes across the foreground of the image. A few small shrubs grow along the near side of the road. The church is sited on a manicured lawn that spreads out along the far side of the road. The church is a large, two-story, wood-frame, gable-roof building that boasts a pedimented roof (forming a triangular shape), a compass window, a square cupola, and a molded door surround. The details suggest the church was constructed around the mid-19th century. Wooden shutters are closed over the long windows. A slightly dilapidated stable is attached to the left side of the church. The stable has three stalls and a gable roof. A wooden fence encloses a cemetery to the right of the church. Several gravestones are visible in the background. There appears to be a pile of firewood or lumber alongside the church. Mature deciduous trees grow on either side of the church. Forested mountains rise in the distance. The thick foliage suggests a summer season. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
