Canoeing and Swimming on Beach at St. Anne's Camp in Isle La Motte
Town:
Isle La Motte
County:
Grand Isle
State:
Vermont
Date:
1910 - 1930
Description:
This black and white photograph captures recreational boaters and swimmers on the beach at St. Anne's Camp in Isle La Motte. The lake encompasses the lower half of the image. The water is very choppy, either from a strong wind or from the raucous play of the campers. A thin strip of beach runs along the far shore of the lake, at the midground of the image. A number of large rocks and boulders are scattered around the beach. The campers row canoes, swim, or are gathered on two wooden diving platforms that are located out on the water. A few more campers are gathered along the shore. All the campers appear to be boys, and they all wear swimming trunks and tank tops; several also wear sailor hats or swimming caps. A steep, rocky slope defines the back edge of the narrow beach. The slope if heavily vegetated with large shrubs and tall conifers and deciduous trees. A wooden staircase ascends the slope to the grounds above. The season is summer. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
