Title:
Bathers at Platts Camp in Highgate Springs
- Date:
- 1920 - 1930
- Description:
- This black and white photograph captures bathers at Platt's Camp in Highgate Springs. The lake encompasses much of the image. A rocky, forested shoreline extends up the right edge of the image and curves slightly around in the distance. Roughly ten men, women, and children pose in the water and along the shore. Four children stand on a small makeshift pier that juts into the water. A couple canoes are beached alongside the pier. Three women in early twentieth-century swimsuits stand in the water, and a fourth rows a canoe. A couple other figures are obscured in the shadows along the shore. Those not wearing swimsuits are wearing casual warm-weather attire. The season is summer. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
