Buildings in Snow-Covered Landscape
1910 - 1940
This black and white photograph looks down a snowy, residential street on a wintry day in Brattleboro. The street enters the lower left corner of the image and extends diagonally towards the background, exiting on the right side of the image. The street surface is covered in snow. Deep wheel ruts traverse the road. Wooden utility poles and tall, leafless, deciduous trees line the left side of the road. Several dwellings, most of which are obscured behind the trees, are located along the left side of the road. The two dwellings closest to the foreground are of wood-frame construction, have gable roofs, are covered in clapboards, and boast front porches. A small, wood-frame outbuilding and large, wood-frame barn are sited to the rear of the dwelling. Several wagons or farming implements are parked to the side of the dwelling. A wooden fence runs alongside the dwelling. The snow suggests a winter season. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 through the 1950s.
