Description:
This historic photograph documents the Heclsseheis Tramway and stack at the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford, Vermont. In the foreground, a large pile of excavated material lines both sides of the tramway as it can be seen crossing a ravine. The trestle tramway is timber framed, and supports an iron railway. On the left side of trestle, a guardrail can be seen, and it appears as though there may be utility lines supported by the large wooden poles on the right. On the other side of the ravine, a large smoke stack can be seen rising up from behind the tramway. The building this stack is attached to, however is not visible. Another timber-framed tramway extends from the stack down towards the building in the center of the photograph. This building appears wood framed and well maintained. Surrounding the tramway and building are the rolling hills of the Green Mountains. This area consists of pockets of pasture surrounded by mixed species forests. Other dwellings appear visible on the hills in the background. season summer.
