Title:
Derricks and Upper Opening of Roofing Slate Quarries
Town:
Pawlet
County:
Rutland
State:
Vermont
Date:
1894
Description:
This image shows a general view of derricks and the upper opening of roofing slate quarries. Large piles of waste slate sit beside a large slate wall in the foreground, which support a large derrick. Below this derrick, a large wooden ladder extends down to the bottom of the quarry. Behind the large derrick, other derricks dot the landscape around the quarry edge, all anchored by iron cables, and used for slate excavation. On the right side of the photograph, a slate worker stands beside an automobile and a shed, with a large slate building visible in the distance. This building has a large smokestack and appears to be wood-framed. Other quarrying buildings are adjacent to this large building. On the hill in the background, sparse deciduous trees, various shrubs, utility poles, and a residential dwelling are visible. The season is summer.
