Title:
Transported Bridge in Front of House
- Date:
- 1927
- Description:
- This photo shows the results of the flood near the corner of Spring and Main streets in the city of Montpelier. The iron bridge shown here was washed down about 1000 feet upstream and was moved back intact. There is another bridge just to the left of the photo which was undamaged but on which there were 6 to 8 feet of rubbish and flood debris as indicated by the slide. There is an ornate home in the background and flood debris in the foreground. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2004-11-27 that it was the old steel bridge from the Lane Shops further up river that is shown on the porch of the Fred Gleason home in this photo. I believe it is now used by either the state or a commercial business. The Gleason girls of my generation & I were playmates, so I spent considerable time there.
