Title:
Street and General Store
- Date:
- 1870 - 1890
- Description:
- Photograph shows a dirt city street lined with trees, houses and a general store in front the entrance to which is raised above street level. Note the four people standing in front of the store (one man is holding a shovel, the other is blurred and must have moved, and there are two small children too) and the sign across the street that reads, "Look out for the engine." Which makes sense since the railroad tracks cross the road! Look closely just beyond the store. There is a hitching rack for horses in front of the store, the sign for which reads, E.M. Bixby, Plaster, Lime, Brick, Hair, Cement, Flour, Salt, Grass Seed,Oil Meal. There are utility poles and lines to the right of the road. This is spring or fall since the trees have no leaves. There are wood fences and sidewalks along the street. There is a lamp post halfway down on the left and a fountain or momument at the end of the street. PB.
