Title:
Slate Quarry in South Poultney
Town:
Poultney
County:
Rutland
State:
Vermont
Date:
1860 - 1950
Description:
This photo captures a slate quarry in South Poultney. There are two large, conical piles of slate with derricks behind them. In the distance is a forest. In the foreground is the quarry wall. There are many wire lines crossing the image, many of which have metal frames that run on pulleys attached to them. A small box of a shed stands in front of the left pile. A man looks out of the small glassless window. This appears to be summer. Back of photo reads, "Note "Motion - Shanty" on east bank above quarry "butt" or "stripping face". Note Dumps. Note "carrier" and "sticks". Note "Motion-Boy" in Shanty". Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2004-12-25: Hamilton Child's Gazetteer & Business Directory,c.1882 lists 13 slate quarries in Poultney.
