Description:
The historic image shows a marble quarry with ladders leading in and out. This metamorphic rock made up of calcium carbonate has been quarried in levels removing block of uniform thickness. There are derricks at the top of the quarry walls and large angular blocks of rock in the quarry. There is a building on the quarry edge and numerous workers within the quarry. A few trees are visible in the distance. Postcard dated Feb. 23, 1907. Please see other related images of the Norcross & West marble quarry in this database. Card reads, "I may see you next week if nothing happens, Jack." Bradley J. Bender writes on 2004-12-7: Much of this marble was used to build the NY public library in NYC. Note this building figured prominently in the 2004 disaster movie about climate change, "The day after tomorrow"
