Title:
Aerial Photograph of Winooski River after Flood
- Date:
- 1927-11-12
- Description:
- The historic Image shows the Winooski River and the Intervale just after the 1927 flood. In the foreground are the abutments for the railroad bridge that connected Burlington and Winooski before the flood removed it. The right abutment has been undercut and eroded; the tracks are dangling. One mid channel abutment still stands, toppled, but above the flow. The tracks lead to open space over the river. There are sand deposits (light colored) on the river floodplain where flow during the flood went overbank. In the distance there is a flood channel off to the left and more sand covers the Intervale. The Intervale farm buildings are clearly visible including the house, barns and a silo along with outbuildings. There are some fruit trees in the fields near the farm. In the left foreground is some type of industrial or warehouse operation with goods stacked outside. There are utility lines and poles along the Intervale Road as well as along the railroad. All along the river are trees that have been bent over by the flow. A handwritten caption at the bottom of the image reads, "Winooski - Burlington Railroad Bridge.
