Title:
Canoeing and Swimming on Beach at St. Anne's Camp in Isle La Motte
Town:
Isle La Motte
County:
Grand Isle
State:
Vermont
Date:
1910 - 1930
Description:
This black and white photograph captures recreational swimming and boating at St. Anne's Camp in Isle La Motte. The lake encompasses the bottom half of the image. The water is very choppy, either from the wind or from the raucous play of the campers. A wooden pier juts out into the lake on the left side of the image. Large stones comprise the foundation for the pier, and wooden planks make up the surface. The beach along the shore is narrow and appears to be covered with coarse sand, stones, and a few large boulders. Roughly one dozen canoes are being rowed out on the lake. A few campers are swimming in the water. Several more campers are gathered along the beach; many are wrapped in towels. All the campers appear to be boys, and they all wear swimming trunks and tank tops; several also wear sailor hats or swimming caps. A steep, rocky slope defines the back edge of the beach. Portions of the slope are vegetated with large shrubs, conifers, and tall, narrow deciduous trees. A wooden staircase ascends the slope near the center of the image. One person is visible near the top of the steps. A wooden fence protects the edge of the cliff at the top of the slope. One person leans on the fence watching the campers below. More tall conifers and deciduous trees are scattered over the grounds atop the hill. The season is summer. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
