Cottages and Lake at Highgate Springs

Title:
Cottages and Lake at Highgate Springs
Town:
Highgate
County:
Franklin
State:
Vermont
Date:
1910 - 1940
Description:
This black and white photograph captures a lake view at Highgate Springs. A very narrow road enters the lower right corner of the image and cuts diagonally across the foreground. Several modest, wood-frame, gable-roof cabins are located along the road. All the cabins appear to have porches and brick chimneys. One cabin is located on the near side of the road, close to the lower left corner of the image. Five more cabins are visible along the far side of the road. A 1910s-era automobile is parked alongside the rightmost cabin. A few conifers grow alongside the cabins, but the immediate vicinity of the road and the lots has been cleared. The rooftops of at least two more poke up from the bottom of a steep hill that slopes downward from behind the row of cabins to the lake. The lake spreads out along the background of the image. Wood utility poles run along the shore near the lower group of cabins. The shoreline continues up the left side of the image and curves around in the distance. Much of the distant landscape is heavily forested. The leafy foliage suggests the season is summer. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
