Bathing in Caspian Lake

Title:
Bathing in Caspian Lake
Town:
Greensboro
County:
Orleans
State:
Vermont
Date:
1910 - 1920
Description:
This black and white photograph captures men and women bathing in Caspian Lake in Greensboro. The lake spreads out across the lower half of the image. The shoreline extends up the right edge of the image and curves around the far side of the lake in the background of the image. An outcropping of rock and a small bit of sand are located in the right foreground. Conifers, deciduous trees, and shrubs grow thickly along the shore. A few cabins and boathouses dot the far shore. At least two canoes are being paddled in the distance. The bathers pose in the foreground of the lake. Two men are standing and holding up a woman. Another man stands to their right, and two more men to the left are submerged in the water to their shoulders. Hills spread out in the distance beyond the shore. Portions of the hills have been cleared. The thick foliage suggests a summer season. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 through the 1950s.
